It can be challenging to know if you’re losing your hair; some men don’t notice for years until they look back at an old photo of themselves and spot the difference.

You’ll probably want to know the average rate of hair loss for anybody to compare yours to others. Let’s look at what typical hair loss looks like.

What is the Normal Hair Loss Rate?

Every man loses some hair each day; daily hair loss is normally insignificant and is part of your hair cycle, so new and healthier strands can grow in their place. Shedding around 50-100 strands daily is normal and nothing to worry about.

However, suppose you want to know the rate of hair loss you usually experience when male pattern hair loss occurs. It isn’t easy to say in that case because every man experiences it differently. For example, some men start to see thinning hair at their crown area, or maybe their hairline will start to recede as the first sign of hair loss; it’s not the same for every man.

There’s no exact rate at which you should or shouldn’t be losing your hair, and factors like your diet, stress, illness, and hair styling routine can affect the overall quality of your hair and how healthy it looks. You can ask a Sons consultant for their opinion, and your hair loss severity can be examined using the Norwood Scale.

The Timeline for Hair Loss Treatment

In the same way, there is no exact timeframe for when you will start losing your hair; the time your body reacts to the hair loss treatment can also vary compared to other men. Usually, the full effects of the treatment are displayed after a year but you should continue taking the medication even after this point so the original thinning and hair loss signs don’t recur.

Typically, however, you can expect hair loss treatment like Finasteride and Minoxidil to start showing signs of progress within three months of consistent consumption as directed. After six months, more significant progress will hopefully be evident through thicker hair and less of your scalp on show.

It likely won’t be until 9 or 12 months into the treatment that the full effects will be there for you to see. Don’t worry if you see shedding at the start of your journey; this isn’t the medication exacerbating your male pattern hair loss but is typical when trying to improve your hair with Finasteride or Minoxidil. Again, there is no fixed timeline for when the shedding could occur, but it often happens within the first few months of treatment.
